How it works

In three steps

1

Light shatters the ink

Very short pulses of light are absorbed by the ink particles and break them into fragments far too small to stay visible.

2

Your body clears them

Your immune system carries those fragments away over the following weeks. This is why sessions are spaced 6–8 weeks apart.

3

The tattoo lightens in layers

Ink sits at different depths. Each session reaches a little deeper, which is why the tattoo fades progressively rather than all at once.

Worth knowing

The honest detail

Removing a tattoo takes longer than getting one, and the honest conversation about that happens at your consultation, before you spend anything.

1

What the session actually feels like

Sharper than getting the tattoo, but much quicker. Most people describe it as hot elastic snapping against the skin. A small tattoo takes around ten minutes including set-up; a large piece takes closer to thirty. We numb the area first and cool it throughout, and you can stop at any point.

2

What results actually look like

The tattoo lightens in stages, not evenly. Black and dark blue ink clears most readily. Reds and oranges respond well. Greens, light blues, yellows and white are the stubborn ones, and white in particular can darken before it clears. Amateur and older tattoos usually need fewer sessions than professional work, because the ink sits shallower and less densely.

3

How many sessions, realistically

Six to twelve for most professional tattoos, six to eight weeks apart, which means a year or more from start to finish. If you only need it light enough to cover up, three or four is often enough, and that is a legitimate and much cheaper goal. We will ask which of the two you actually want.

4

Things that change the outcome

Drinking water, not smoking, and gentle exercise all help, because your immune system does the clearing. Tattoos low on the legs and ankles clear more slowly than ones on the chest or back, where circulation is better. Sun exposure between sessions is the single easiest way to slow everything down.

5

Eyebrows, microblading and permanent makeup

Cosmetic tattoos are their own skill. The pigments often contain iron oxide or titanium, which can darken instantly when treated, and it alarms people who have not been warned. We always test a small area first and we will explain exactly what you will see. Most brows take three to six sessions.

Timeline

What happens afterwards

Hours 0–24
redness, swelling and a temporary white frosting over the ink. Keep it clean, dry and covered.
Days 1–3
blistering or scabbing can occur and is a normal part of healing. Do not pick it.
Days 4–14
the area heals over. Keep using the ointment we give you and stay out of the sun.
Weeks 2–8
the ink continues to clear as your body processes it. The tattoo keeps fading between visits.
Your safety & comfort

Careful, every time

Removal is a medical procedure and we treat it as one. The risks worth knowing about are blistering, temporary lightening or darkening of the skin, and, rarely, scarring. Careful settings and good aftercare are what keep those uncommon.

How we keep you safe

  • Free consultation first, where we look at ink color, depth, age and your skin tone
  • A test spot is done when the ink is unusual or your skin is deeply pigmented
  • Numbing cream and cooling are used throughout to keep you comfortable
  • Protective eyewear is worn by everyone in the room
  • Sessions are spaced at least 6–8 weeks apart so your skin fully recovers between them
  • Written aftercare instructions go home with you every time

This may not be right for you if

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • The skin over the tattoo is broken, infected or sunburnt
  • You have tanned or used self-tanner in the last 2 weeks
  • You have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) in the last 6 months
  • You have a history of keloid scarring

Please tell us about

  • When and where the tattoo was done, and by whom
  • Whether it has been treated or covered before
  • Any medication, especially antibiotics or light-sensitizing drugs
  • Any history of poor healing or keloid scars

This page is general information, not medical advice. Every treatment at Permaskin begins with a free consultation, where we review your health history and tell you honestly whether this is the right choice for you. Individual results vary.
